Titans tantalized with Moss possibilities

The Tennessee Titans are excited to have Randy Moss joining Chris Johnson on offense. The same team that passed on Moss in 1998 will have an opportunity to use him more than a decade later. How will it turn out? Time will tell.
So much for that ho-hum bye week.
, often criticized for being Rush Limbaugh-conservative in their offensive and front-office approach, dropped a bombshell on Wednesday when they claimed wide receiver
off waivers from the
Moss fell out of favor after just a month back in Minnesota, but his agent Joel Segal says he is ready to contribute for the Titans.
"Randy is going to be a great fit. He is excited about coming back and getting back to playing football," Segal said.
The Titans were the only team to grab the remainder of Moss' $6.4 million contract on Wednesday, and now will have to figure out how to use the most talented receiver to ever don a Tennessee uniform — even if it is just for the final eight games of the season.
Tennessee bypassed Moss 12 years ago in the 1998 draft, instead selecting Kevin Dyson with their first-round pick. While Dyson had a nice career and was part of the two most memorable plays in franchise history (Music City Miracle and one yard short in the Super Bowl), Moss is a different dynamic altogether.
"Our personnel department felt like Kevin Dyson was a better fit," Fisher said. "Randy's had a terrific career. He's a Hall of Fame receiver, and you don't always make the right decisions. When you draft, it's an imperfect science. We've had No. 1s that didn't work out."
Part of the Titans' about-face on their feelings about Moss are probably a by-product of needing a dynamic threat on the outside to help open rushing lanes for running back
, who has 721 yards rushing, but has been keyed on all season by opposing defenses.
Johnson, who shares the same agent as Moss in Segal, had been lobbying the Titans to go after him once the Vikings announced Monday they were dumping him on the waiver wire.
"You can't play eight in the box if you've got Randy Moss out there on the outside," Johnson said. "If you've got Randy Moss out there, you just can't play him one-on-one. I feel like Randy will be a great addition to this team and be a great addition to our receiver group and really help us to go deep in the playoffs.
"I've been telling coach Fisher and coach (Mike) Heimerdinger (offensive coordinator) and all them," Johnson said. "They know how I feel about the situation."
Another part of the equation is that up-and-coming receiver
popped his hamstring last week against the
San Diego Chargers
and is likely to miss several weeks while he recuperates from that injury.
Of course, Moss comes with a downside as well. He has worn out welcomes with the Vikings (twice), the Patriots earlier this year and in Oakland.
One of Moss' teammates with the Raiders, however, defended him and said the two co-existed well in 2005 when both were in Oakland.
"I like Randy,"
said. "Randy, when I was with him was professional. He's a smart guy and obviously extremely talented. Defenses have to pay a lot of attention to him. From that standpoint, he would be a great addition to our team."
Fisher indicated the Titans would try to have Moss involved as quickly as possible. It probably helps that Tennessee is off this week with another week before they visit the Miami Dolphins.
"We had an opportunity to upgrade our offense and Randy has been a tremendous threat where ever he has been. We will bring him up to speed as quickly as possible," Fisher said.
