Everson Griffen won’t be facing felony charges for his Monday arrest, but the NFL is looking at his Saturday and Monday arrests and is likely to hand out discipline at some point.

The Everson Griffen situation in California took on a “good news, bad news” component Tuesday. The good news is that he won’t face felony charges due to his confrontation with police. The bad news is that, from the NFL’s view, he earned two strikes in three days.

Griffen, who posted bail and was released from jail early Tuesday morning, won’t be charged with felony battery of a police officer after prosecutors in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office opted not to file felony charges – citing the lack of injury to the officer and Griffen’s lack of a prior criminal history. He is, however, expected to be charged with a misdemeanor, most likely attempting to flee police for not cooperating with commands. His first scheduled court appearance on the charge is Feb. 25.

Where the NFL may pop up a red flag is that Monday’s arrest was Griffen’s second in three days. He was arrested early Saturday morning for being drunk in public in the Hollywood section of the city. He was arrested and released later Saturday. According to local reports, Griffen’s impetus for fleeing officers was that he was didn’t want to go back to jail again.

The good news for Griffen is that he won’t face felony charges, which, given the gravity of the initial charge, could have carried mandatory jail time if convicted on those charges. However, he is almost sure to face some sort of punishment from the league under the personal conduct policy.

Right now, the NFL has more pressing matters on its own plate, but it is extremely unlikely that it will forget about Griffen’s long weekend and punishment is likely to be handed down at some point.

WEDNESDAY NOTES

  • Vikings defensive back coach Joe Woods survived the coaching purge with the team, but still may not be part of the coaching staff next season. Woods interviewed with the Eagles for their vacant defensive coordinator position.

  • The Hollywood Reporter conducted a reader poll in which one of the questions was “who is the most hated player in the NFL?” Brett Favre “won” the poll, distancing Michael Vick, who spent two years in federal prison for dog fighting. Tom Brady finished third, due to leaving pregnant girlfriend Bridget Moynahan to take up with supermodel Gisele Bundchen, who he eventually married two years ago. Ben Roethlisberger finished fourth in the poll, thanks in large part to sexual assault allegations filed last offseason that led to a four-game suspension to start the 2010.

  • Down at the Super Bowl, Packers president Mark Murphy said team officials still expect that they will reconcile with Favre and that he will return to the Packers family at some point in the future. Hall of Famer Paul Hornung said recently that he fully expects to see Favre and the Packers kiss and make up at some point.

  • Aaron Rodgers said at media day that neither he nor Favre have contacted one another since the Packers advanced to the Super Bowl.
