Chapman on the Line?

Doug Chapman

Doug Chapman was once thought to be the next big thing as far as Vikings running backs go. But, after being pushed aside by Michael Bennett, his Vikings future could come down to a strong minicamp.

When VU spoke with Mike Tice following the selection of RB Onterrio Smith -- a player the Vikes had listed as a first-rounder -- the typical questions came up.

Tice diffused any speculation that Michael Bennett's injured foot isn't healing properly. He also said Moe Williams would be a valued asset. But, when Doug Chapman's name come up, he raised his eyebrows and shrugged -- the universal coaching symbol for "who knows?"

VU has been told that Chapman will have to have a solid minicamp this weekend to keep the No. 2 featured role with the team. Considering his salary, if he falls behind Smith and Williams on the depth chart, his future with the team would be in serious jeopardy.

While many fans may not believe jobs are won or lost in minicamp, the truth is the Vikings are hoping Smith lives up to their own lofty expectations. If he does, Chapman may end up becoming an afterthought and a training camp casualty.
