Vikes Cut Camp Short

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings minicamp was cut short by weather -- as head coach Mike Tice opted out of the final minicamp session to keep his team off the indoor turf at Winter Park.

The Vikings coaching staff was happy with the three-day minicamp, despite cutting it short by one practice Sunday. With rain pelting Eden Prairie much of the weekend, Mike Tice opted out of the final practice Sunday afternoon -- which, like the early practice, would have been forced to be conducted inside.

Citing not wanting the players to have back-to-back practices on Astroturf, Tice canceled the final minicamp session to avoid any needless injuries.

The word VU got was that the coaches got the look they needed at the new players that have been brought in since the end of last season and opted to err on the side of caution.

MONDAY NOTES
* In a related, yet unrelated news bit from this weekend, DT Jimmy Kennedy -- thought by many to be the Vikings' first-round selection on the defensive line -- sustained a knee injury during the Rams minicamp. A Rams source of VU's said the injury is being described as a bruised knee tendon. While it is not considered to be in the serious category, it is something that some Rams insiders are concerned about.
* RB Onterrio Smith was one of the interesting minicamp stories. He is prepared to take on whatever role he is given with the Vikings -- for now. He assigned himself a nickname -- "S.O.D." What does that mean> "Steal of the Draft" according to Smith.
* During minicamp, Lewis Kelly worked at both guard and tackle positions -- a versatility spot held previously by Everett Lindsay. Ironically, Lindsay did most of his work as a backup center.
* Dallas RB Ennis Haywood, who was hospitalized Saturday after vomiting early Saturday morning, declined quickly. At 6 a.m. Saturday, he stopped breathing. Sunday night, Haywood died. Having been through a similar situation with the tragic death of Korey Stringer, the VU family extends our thoughts and prayers to Haywood's family and teammates.
