Punter Chris Kluwe talked to former Vikings QB Donovan McNabb and said he plans to pay the $5,000 charitable donation he agreed to during the preseason. Plus, Adrian Peterson has his surgery, Redskins safety Reed Doughty was fined and more.
Vikings punter
Chris Kluwe
said
Donovan McNabb
is “more than happy” to write the $5,000 check he promised to charity in a preseason contract the two put to video when Kluwe agreed to give up his number 5 jersey to McNabb.
Kluwe said last week that he hadn’t received the money. After reporting that here, the story was picked up by several nationally focused web sites. On Friday, Kluwe let it be known – via Twitter, of course – that he has talked to McNabb and the $5,000 payment to the Kick for a Cure charity should be coming soon.
“ATTENTION MEDIA VULTURES – I talked to Donovan and he's more than happy to write the check to Kick For a Cure, since he's a standup guy,” Kluwe tweeted. “Like I said originally, this was on me because I hadn't had a chance to ask him since midseason. You may now return to pecking at the dead horse carcass of
Tim Tebow
.”
When approached by a reporter Friday, Kluwe laughed and cawed with playful ribbing. He said McNabb called him and they eventually got in touch.
“He just wanted to know what was going on. I was planning on talking to him at the end of the season because that’s when I do all my charity stuff,” Kluwe said. “I get everything set together and send it out. Unfortunately, when he got released, that put the kibosh on that plan. So I figured after the season is over when things have died down get in contact with him.
“He was more than willing to donate the check. Like I said, I had never gotten a chance to ask him for it. I was planning on doing it at the end of the season. So he’s going to send the check to Kick for a Cure.”
The contract that was written up for Kluwe’s jersey number upon McNabb’s arrival in Minnesota included five mentions of Kluwe’s band Tripping Icarus in press conferences, the $5,000 payment and an ice cream cone.
Since the original story ran last week, several inquisitive minds wanted to know if Kluwe received his ice cream cone.
“Still no ice cream cone,” Kluwe said with a smile. “No, I didn’t ask him for it.”
Kluwe said he didn’t have a chance to ask McNabb for any of the items in the contract earlier because he didn’t even see the quarterback after learning he had been released.
PETERSON HAS SURGERY
The Vikings released a comment on
Adrian Peterson
's knee surgery Friday.
"We’ve received word that Adrian underwent successful knee surgery with Dr. James Andrews and is now resting comfortably," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said in a statement. "Adrian is in our thoughts, we wish him a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him when he returns to Minnesota."
Peterson tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his left knee in last Saturday’s game and had the surgery in Alabama.
NOTES
Redskins safety
Reed Doughty
was fined $15,000 for his hit on
Christian Ponder
for striking "the opposing QB in the head and neck area as he slid."
TE
Mickey Shuler
(ankle) is doubtful for Sunday’s regular-season finale and CB
Chris Cook
(legal) is out. All other Vikings listed on the injury report were probable, meaning they are a “virtual certainty” to play.
For the Bears, RB
Marion Barber
(calf) is doubtful and LB
Brian Urlacher
(knee) is questionable. All others are probable.
After some consideration, Leslie Frazier came up with a New Year’s resolution: “I just really want us to go out and play well on Sunday against Chicago. That happens to be New Years, so I guess that’s a resolution,” he said.
