The Vikings are expected to offer their defensive coordinator position to Alan Williams, the defensive backs coach with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly found their next defensive coordinator, someone well-versed in coach Leslie Frazier's preferred Cover-2 system.

Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach Alan Williams is expected to be offered the coordinator position in Minnesota, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. La Canfora had previously reported that Williams was likely interviewing with the team on Tuesday.

Williams, 42, and Frazier have coached together in the past. Williams has spent the past 10 years as the defensive backs coach in Indianapolis. He worked with Frazier in 2005 and 2006 when Frazier assisted with the defensive backs and served as a special assistant to then-head coach Tony Dungy.

The Colts ran a similar Tampa-2 system that Minnesota has employed under Frazier. Williams also shares a similar background as former Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin. Williams and Tomlin coached together in 2001 when Williams started his NFL coaching career as a defensive assistant in Tampa Bay. The two were also teammates at William & Mary in 1990 and 1991.

Williams could be tempted to leave after the recent shakeup in Indianapolis. The Colts fired their head coach, Jim Caldwell, on Tuesday.

Minnesota is looking for some stability. Fred Pagac, who assumed the role as coordinator after Frazier was promoted to head coach, was let go last week and offered a job to remain in Minnesota as the linebackers coach, according to the Pioneer Press.

If Pagac were to accept the demotion to linebackers coach — a position he held from 2006-10 — the status of coach Mike Singletary would come into question, though the Pioneer Press is reporting Singletary would stay on staff as Frazier's assistant. Singletary, a close friend of Frazier's, came to the Vikings last offseason as linebackers coach and special assistant to the head coach.

Minnesota had reportedly interviewed at least two other candidates to replace Pagac. Raheem Morris, fired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the season, interviewed before accepting a job as defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins. Morris reportedly wasn't offered the coordinator job with the Vikings.

Jacksonville Jaguars interim head coach Mel Tucker also interviewed but chose to stay in Jacksonville in his former position as defensive coordinator after the Jaguars hired Mike Mularkey as head coach.

Singletary also was expected to be interviewed for the defensive coordinator position in Minnesota.

Defensive backs coach Joe Woods currently remains with the Vikings. Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar was let go after the season ended.
