Former Temple running back Bernard Pierce announced his decision to test out the NFL waters in January and sat down Saturday to discuss his unique motivation for his choice.

Every year, players decide to take their chances in the draft as juniors, but not many have the same motivation as Temple running back Bernard Pierce.

“My mother and I had a long talk about it and I thought this year would be a good year for me to go out,” Pierce said at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Pierce had one more big thing on his mind.

“I want to be able to support my family and my girlfriend that I am with right now,” Pierce said. “She is pregnant and the baby’s due in July so I’m excited for that.”

He concluded, “I just thought this was an all-around good decision.”

Plus, he received a third-round draft grade from the advisory committee.

“I really don’t think it’s a big factor because regardless, it was time for me to become a man,” Pierce said. “I’m about to start my own family and I need to be able to support my family and my child.”

Pierce is coming off a very successful career for the Owls.

“My stock was pretty high,” Pierce said. “I did a lot for Temple in the 3 years that I was there, love my teammates and everything.”

He continued, “But I just thought I would like to take a step in this direction.”

Now that the decision has been made, the former Temple standout is using the Combine to improve his draft stock even more.

“I’m showing my speed, power, my vision,” Pierce said. “I can find a hole, I had 27 touchdowns this year.”

And after Sunday’s 4.49 time in the 40, that’s not surprising.

“I have a neck for the end zone,” Pierce said. “So I just think with size, speed and power, together I can really contribute to any team.”

Although Pierce is excitedly looking towards the future, he’s not afraid to reflect a little on his past.

“That was the deciding factor of me coming out,” Pierce said of his family. “But I felt like I accomplished a lot, and you know I’ve been taking 250 plus carries a year.”

He added, “So it’s a lot of wear and tear on the body, so I just wanted to come to try out for the NFL this year because you never know what’s promised for next year.”

Something that is promised when it comes to Pierce, is the type of person he is – something that he is trying to showcase during team interviews at the combine.

“As long as your just honest and say what’s in your heart,” Pierce said. “And talk about the sport, talk about you love it, and put God first, they love it.”
