Bennett Won't Be Ready

Four months ago, Michael Bennett had foot surgery following an injury at Winter Park. With training camp a little more than two weeks away, Bennett is still feeling the after-effects and could be a training camp question mark.
At the time of
Michael Bennett
's foot injury -- an awkward treadmill incident at Winter Park -- the Vikings were quick to say that the injury would prevent him from taking part in minicamp, but he would be good to go by training camp. No doubt, VU was told.
When pressed on the potential severity of a foot injury to a player who depends on his speed and cutting ability, some of the Vikings personnel over 6-6 got almost violent. Not a problem, we were told.
Eden Prairie, we have a problem.
What is being termed as a setback, Bennett is still feeling discomfort in the foot four months after surgery. As it stands, it looks like he will continue to be limited if allowed to practice at all when training camp opens later this month.
If Bennett can't go, look for rookie
Onterrio Smith
to get the first shot at seeing the most playing time, followed by
Doug Chapman
. Moe Williams' role with the team will remain pretty much what it was last year -- third downs, goal line/short yardage and special teams.
WEDNESDAY NOTES
* Another Viking who has been under the knife is back at 100 percent. OG
Chris Liwienski
had a procedure on his knee following minicamp but is said to be at 100 percent and ready to go for the start of camp.
* With a jury expected to be selected this week, Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders dropped their seven-year long lawsuit against the NFL. No word if a settlement was reached, but it's doubtful Uncle Al would have spend seven years' of lawyer fees for a hug from Paul Talgiabue.
