Vikings slip slightly in AP Pro32 rankings

Christian Ponder (Tom Dahlin/Viking Update)

The Vikings' loss last Thursday night didn't affect their rankings much, but it did drop them two spots.

Still unbeaten, still No. 1 in AP Pro32 NFL power rankings.

The Atlanta Falcons easily retain the top spot following a convincing win at Philadelphia, with the New York Giants edging the Houston Texans for second place in the latest rankings.

The league's only undefeated team receives nine first-place votes and 319 points from 10 of the 12 media members on The Associated Press panel who reported their ballots.

The Giants have the other first-place vote and 303 points, two more than the third-place Texans as the top seven teams held steady from a week ago.

Indianapolis made the biggest move, advancing eight spots to No. 16 after a win over Tennessee.

Kansas City is 32nd and last.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Chris Berman, ESPN (17) –Will need the 10 days to get ready for Seattle's 12th Man.

Rich Gannon, CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio (12) – Not their best performance on Thursday against Tampa. They need to get Ponder back on track quickly.

Bob Glauber, Newsday (14) — Christian Ponder looks like a different guy. After a 4-1 start with six TDs, 2 INTs and nine sacks, he's 1-2 in his last three with four TDs, five INTs and 10 sacks.

Rick Gosselin, Dallas Morning News (11) — Unheralded outside linebacker Chad Greenway of the Vikings leads the NFL in tackles with 81.

Clark Judge, CBSSports.com (14) — The more Christian Ponder screws up, the more these guys are in trouble — and he's committing way too many mistakes now.

Ira Kaufman, Tampa Tribune (13) — After an outstanding first month, Christian Ponder has lost his mojo.

John Lynch, Fox Sports (12) — The Vikings still are trying to figure out what hit them as the Bucs came into the Metrodome on Thursday night and dominated. Another tough test this week in Seattle.

Alex Marvez, Foxsports.com (12) – The Vikings face two challenges in the second half of the season: Getting second-year quarterback Christian Ponder back on track and compensating for the loss of cornerback Chris Cook (arm).

Dan Pompei, Chicago Tribune (10) — They cannot be as bad as the team we saw last Thursday. Can they?
