Vikings' Peterson has sports hernia surgery
The surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, the team announced.
"We expect a speedy recovery with no long-term concerns," the Vikings said via the team's official Twitter account.
Peterson started every game this year, despite coming off Dec. 30, 2011 surgery to repair torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his knee. He finished with 2,097 yards rushing, the second-highest total in NFL history, and 12 touchdowns and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player on Saturday. He came up just nine yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's all-time rushing record of 2,105 yards in a single season.
Peterson was first listed with an abdomen injury after the team's Dec. 16 win at St. Louis, but he didn't appear to be limited because of it until a 23-6 win against the Houston Texans on Dec. 23. Despite Peterson chasing Dickerson's record, eight of the final 10 carries in that game went to backup Toby Gerhart, and Peterson said the pain he was feeling was the reason for that.
"That's the reason I came out because I felt like it was best for Toby to go in at that point in time and on that play he would give us the better opportunity to get it in the end zone," Peterson said. "I didn't want to be selfish just because we were down by the end zone and go in there and not be able to go 100 percent. Toby did a good job of executing and finishing that drive."
Peterson finished that game with only 86 yards rushing, the only time in the last 10 games of the regular season he was below 100 yards. The next week, in the regular-season finale against the Green Bay Packers, he rushed 28 times for 199 yards.
In addition to his knee and abdomen issues, Peterson also dealt with ankle, shoulder and groin issues during the 2012 season.
