The inside linebacker agrees to a pay cut that provides the team $1.85 million more under the salary cap.

A.J. Hawk agreed to a salary reduction that gives the Green Bay Packers an additional $1.85 million in salary cap space for 2013, putting the team about $19.7 million under the cap.

According to reports, Hawk will earn $7.5 million less over the final three seasons of his contract.

In 2013, Hawk was to make a $4.9 million base salary and roster and workout bonuses of $550,000, giving him a total take-home of $5.45 million. Now, he’ll pocket a base salary of $840,000 and a guaranteed roster bonus of $2.21 million. Including per-game roster bonuses totaling $300,000 and keeping the $250,000 workout bonus, Hawk’s haul could be as much as $3.6 million.

Figuring in the pro-rated signing bonus of $1.6 million from his 2011 deal, Hawk’s cap figure goes from $7.05 million to $5.2 million.

In 2014, Hawk is due to make $3.5 million per season (idential $2.45 million base salaries, plus yearly roster bonuses of $500,000, weekly roster bonuses totaling $300,000 and workout bonuses of $250,000). He had been scheduled to make a total of $5.95 million in 2014 and $6.45 million in 2015.

Thus, his cap numbers have gone from $7.55 million in 2014 and $8.05 million in 2015 to $5.1 million in each of those two seasons.

Hawk essentially became a part-time player this season with defensive coordinator Dom Capers’ increased used of a dime defensive package that took off the field. While his three sacks matched his total from 2009 through 2011, Hawk for a second consecutive season wasn’t involved in any turnover-producing plays (no interceptions, forced fumbles or recoveries. Even with his limited snap count, Hawk led the team with 142 tackles.
