First-round defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd wasn’t concerned about his injured left knee after Friday’s game, but increased soreness is prompting the Vikings to get an MRI on that knee.

Sharrif Floyd wasn’t concerned about his left knee after Friday’s game, despite it requiring the attention of trainers and ending his night after 15 snaps.

However, two days later he is experiencing more soreness and the Vikings are having a magnetic resonance imaging test done on the left knee of their first-round defensive tackle.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier didn’t sound too concerned Sunday and indicated the MRI was more precautionary than anything else.

“Sharrif was a little bit sorer today than we thought he would be,” Frazier said. “Not overly concerned by everything I’ve been told. He’s just sore so we want to err on the side of caution. He fell on the knee and he was pretty sore this morning. The fact that he was sorer than he was yesterday makes us decide that we need to make sure there’s nothing else going on. Other than the fact of soreness, not overly concerned.”

The injury occurred in the second quarter of the Vikings’ loss to the Houston Texans Friday night.

“Late cut (block) and I came off to the side,” Floyd told Viking Update after the game. “It felt weird, and when something feels weird, don’t move. (Trainers) said everything was fine so no problems.”

Floyd said then there was “not a chance” he would miss any practice time and he was “completely fine” on Friday night, but Frazier said Sunday he wouldn’t practice in the afternoon.

Floyd made a good first impression. He had a tackle for loss and batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

LB Desmond Bishop and Jacob Lacey, who is having arthroscopic surgery on his knee, also won’t practice either, Frazier said. He thought Lacey would be out two to four weeks. The fifth-year cornerback, in his first year with the Vikings, didn’t play Friday night.

Frazier said the coaching staff would use more than just preseason games to determine who makes the final 53-man roster.

“We still have a lot of time and a lot more work to get done before you make a decision on anybody. You want to have a broad perspective,” he said.

Starters are expected to play into the second quarter of this Friday’s preseason game at Buffalo, depending on the set number of snaps the coaching staff wants to see, Frazier said.

NOTES

  • Frazier said the execution wasn’t as good Friday night as he hoped, but he was pleased with the effort and lack of penalties. He pointed out the red zone offense needs work.

  • CBs Xavier Rhodes and A.J. Jefferson, who didn’t play Friday night because of injuries, should practice Sunday afternoon, Frazier said. DT Christian Ballard may be held out with a groin injury. S Brandan Bishop is ill.
