Vikings: No ligament damage for DT Williams
The Vikings defensive tackle suffered a hyperextended right knee, a "significant" bone contusion and a posterior capsular strain, according to a statement by head coach Leslie Frazier.
The injury occurred in the third quarter when Williams didn't see a chop block coming from San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Joe Looney. Williams was watching 49ers running back LaMichael James being corralled for a 7-yard loss and moving to his right when Looney got up off the ground and threw himself into Williams' knee.
"Kevin was fortunate in that there was no injury to any of his ligaments," Frazier said in a statement.
The timeframe for Williams' return to practice isn't known, but it's possible he resumes activities next week in advance of the regular-season opener Sept. 8 in Detroit if the posterior capsular strain and hyperextension are minor. Frazier is expected to address that part of the equation Tuesday.
The Vikings are likely to send Looney's hit into the NFL offices for review for potential disciplinary action.
"The guys upstairs … were pretty upset when they saw it so we've got to take a look at it," Frazier said after the game, saying he needed to review the play himself on Monday.
