The low block Ndamukong Suh put on John Sullivan could bring more discipline for the Lions defensive tackle who has a reputation for dirty play.
’s low block on
on Sunday is being reviewed for potential discipline, an NFL spokesman confirmed Monday morning.
The Lions were penalized 15 yards, nullifying an interception return for a touchdown, because of Suh’s diving block into the left knee of Sullivan.
“I got to know Suh at the Pro Bowl last year, and he’s a good dude, but that’s uncalled for,” defensive end
told reporters after the game. “This is a fraternity. In the NFL, you try and take care of guys. Granted, things happen and guys are going to make hits and some things are going to be borderline. But you can’t take a dude’s legs out from behind on an interception when he’s running down the field. To me, there’s just no room for that.”
The play came early in the second quarter of the Lions’ 34-24 win when linebacker
pass that went off the hands of
. Levy caught the deflection in stride and started running 33 yards for a touchdown. Sullivan was trailing Levy by at least five yards, but Suh dove at Sullivan and hit him in his left knee. Sullivan immediately went to the ground and grabbed the knee. He didn’t miss a play, but, according to reports, he had an ice pack on the knee in the locker room after the game.
“I missed the shot of it, but the guys were telling me about it,” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said after the game. “Nobody thought that that was a good play. The fact that they got a penalty because of it tells you it wasn’t a good play. You hate to see guys go low on players. We’ve seen the results of it, so it’s not a good thing when it happens.”
The Vikings were without defensive tackle
on Sunday because of a similar-looking incident in Week 3 of the preseason when
San Francisco 49ers
blocked low into Williams’ knee. Looney wasn’t disciplined for his block, with the NFL saying it was a legal play.
Sunday’s incident was hardly the first time Suh’s actions on the field have been considered dirty.
Last year, he kicked kick Houston Texans quarterback
in the groin. Suh was on the ground next to Schaub and kicked him after Schaub released the ball. Suh wasn’t suspended for his 2012 kick on Schaub, but he was fined $30,000.
In 2011, Suh was suspended two games for stomping on the arm of
Green Bay Packers
as Suh was leaving the pile.
In 2011, Suh was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, roughing the passing and a 15-yard facemask penalty, among other infractions. In 2010, among his 11 penalties were roughing the passer, illegal use of the hands, a horse-collar tackle, two for unnecessary roughness, an illegal block above the waist, and a facemask.
