Vikings to sign QB Josh Freeman
Freeman, who was the starter for Tampa Bay two weeks ago, had a quick falling out with the organization and was released late last week.
The Vikings have yet to submit the official agreement to the league office, which will happen Monday and require a player to be released from the Vikings' 53-man roster. The logical choice would appear to be McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
The deal is for one year, reportedly for $3 million, and may require the Vikings to restructure another contract or two in order to fit under the salary cap, but the move gives the Vikings the next three months to evaluate up close a player they liked when scouting him prior to the 2009 NFL Draft.
Freeman became a starter as a rookie with Tampa Bay in 2009. He started nine games that season and was a full-time starter for the next three years. His highlight season was in 2010, leading the Buccaneers to a 10-6 record, throwing 25 touchdowns with just six interceptions. Over the next two seasons, Freeman struggled often, throwing 43 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. In three starts this season, he completed just 45.7 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and three interceptions – posting a passer rating of just 59.3.
