Because of injuries, Matt Asiata could be the Vikings' featured back on Sunday. If that's the case,…
Notebook: Asiata's father dies in accident
Asiata's agent Ken Vierra confirmed the connection Tuesday afternoon.
The Utah Highway Patrol says 53-year-old father Pita Asiata of Bountiful was impaled by a drilling device when his bus crashed into a utility truck on Interstate 80 near the Utah-Nevada border.
Officials say three of the 50 bus passengers were critically injured in the crash, which is under investigation.
Matt Asiata is a 26-year-old from West Valley City, Utah, who played football for the University of Utah before joining the NFL.
The Vikings released a statement Tuesday: "We are aware of the tragic incident involving Matt's father, Pita Asiata. This is heartbreaking news for Matt and his family. We are here to support the Asiata family in any way possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Asiata family."
MAN ACCUSED IN DEATH OF A.D.'s SON OUT OF JAIL
The man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has bonded out of a South Dakota jail.
The Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls says 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson is no longer housed there.
His attorney, Tim Rensch, confirmed Patterson's release and says there are no conditions on it, but Patterson plans to stay in the area and defend himself.
Patterson's bond was reduced to $750,000 on Monday, so he had to post $75,000.
He's charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the death of Tyrese Robert Ruffin.
Patterson is the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother.
Peterson had just recently found out that Tyrese was his son.
