The December audition for Josh Freeman never happened. Christian Ponder grabbing hold of his opportunity slipped away. Matt Cassel is the Vikings’ quarterback and the fans agree by voting him the FedEx Air Player of the Week.
The fans have spoken.
By a vote of fans on the NFL’s official website, Vikings quarterback
was named the Fed Ex Air Player of the Week after completing 26 of 35 passes for 382 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings put up 48 points against the
– the most points scored by a Vikings team since 1998.
The Vikings have spent much of the 2013 season searching for their interim quarterback until they draft the one they believe is going to be a long-term solution. They have two first-round picks on the roster –
. Yet Cassel has been the best of the three in the only stat the counts – winning and losing. The Vikings are 3-2 in games that Cassel has been the primary quarterback. They are 1-7-1 in their other nine games.
Now the fans have registered their vote based off of last week’s performance. It will be interesting to see if the decision-makers with the Vikings are listening.
What was expected to be Freeman’s December audition for a potential long-term contract has turned into an audition to tear up the player-option deal Cassel has for 2014 and pay him some significant money to be the QB for the next couple of years – with enough up-front money to make it palatable, especially if the Vikings are looking at drafting a quarterback that would be better suited to playing late-season home games in the new Vikings stadium than two years outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium. Given Cassel’s outdoor experience as a starter in Boston and Kansas City, he may be the option that is best for business – even if the Vikings take a QB in the first round of next year’s draft.
Hennepin County Judge Mel Dickstein denied a request to grant a temporary restraining order to stop construction of a proposed $400 million development on property owned by the
newspaper. In the ruling, there wasn’t enough compelling evidence to grant the TRO being requested, which disputed whether the Minneapolis City Council has the authority to establish a park as part of the Downtown East project.
The Vikings plan to have as many as 700 security personnel – ranging from uniformed Minneapolis Police Department officers and in-dome security – to assure that there won’t be a repeat of what happened at the final game at Met Stadium. Weren’t born at the time? Here’s
(stick around long enough to here the classic line, “Get out of here, you creep!”) What happened at the Met 32 years ago yesterday apparently isn’t going to happen at the Metrodome. But don’t be surprised if most media outlets keep an employee watching the exits to make sure we don’t see a repeat.
After questions being raised as to whether a potential division-clinching game would be sold out, the Bengals announced Friday afternoon that Sunday’s game with the Vikings is sold out and won’t be the second blacked out game of the 2013 season.
