Henderson arrested again for DWI

Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson was arrested for DWI for the second time in less than two months. It could signal the end of his Vikings career and it wouldn’t cost the Vikings much to release him.
Henderson also had in his possession a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to a police statement, following a single-vehicle crash in which he wasn’t injured.
Henderson, who was also arrested on Nov. 19 for probable cause DWI and possession of a controlled substance, also was in violation of his limited driver’s license conditions.
Carver County deputies initially received a call about a black SUV that was speeding and “driving all over the road.” Shortly afterwards, they received a call about a single-vehicle accident in which Henderson “lost control, skidded over the centerline, through a grassy area, and then through the parking lot before colliding with trees on the west side of the parking lot.”
Henderson wasn’t injured, but the front of the vehicle was “heavily damaged” and damage was also found on the left and right sides. According to the report, “Henderson appeared to be under the influence of alcohol (i.e., his breath had a strong odor of consumed alcohol; his eyes were bloodshot and glassy; and he had poor balance).”
Henderson’s attorney, David Valentini, filed a petition in November to have Henderson’s license reinstated after that arrest. According to the Associated Press, the petition argued that police did not have “articulable grounds to make an investigatory stop” nor did they have “reasonable and probable cause” for that arrest.
The Vikings said in a statement Thursday they are aware of the latest incident and will have further comment “at the appropriate time.”
Henderson remained on the roster but didn’t play in the next two games following his November arrest.
When he returned to the team, Henderson told reporters he apologized for any embarrassment he brought to teammates and the organization and called the November arrest a “wake-up call.”
“Honestly, it may be something that I needed in the long run, something I think will help me progress and become the person I’m capable of being and the man that I want to be,” Henderson said in November.
“This will give me the opportunity to really step back and look in the mirror and look at my reflection and become happier with the person that I am and the person that I know I can become. And like I said, I’ve been given a lot of great tools and a lot of resources by the program and by the organization here, something I’m very thankful for. I look forward to showing you guys the improvements of myself.”
At that time, it was the third arrest of the season for the Vikings, and general manager Rick Spielman issued a statement.
“The fact that we have had three recent off field situations is unacceptable and disappointing,” Spielman said in the statement. “Our organization looks at each situation and the circumstances involved to determine our actions with those players and how to best move forward. The Vikings have a comprehensive approach with our player development program and excellent resources that are a part of this organization, but certainly we will take a methodical look at how we can improve upon our current programs to prevent these situations in the future.”
Henderson is under contract for 2014 with a salary cap number of $2.25 million, but it would only cost the Vikings $250,000 in cap dollars (the prorated amount of his 2013 signing bonus) to release him.
