New and old players react to Zimmer hire

Bengals and Vikings players reacted to the news of Mike Zimmer being hired as the Vikings' next head coach. So did a couple of former NFL players.

Whether it was coming from his former players with the Cincinnati Bengals or his new players waiting to talk with him after the Minnesota Vikings hired him as head coach, there appears to be a lot of respect for Mike Zimmer in the Twitterverse.

Zimmer, the former defensive coordinator for the Bengals, was hired Wednesday as the new head coach for the Vikings.

"I told you Zimm would be the Head Coach, that was a good move for the Vikings. Congrats to coach!!!" Bengals cornerback Adam Jones wrote on Twitter.

He was right.

Zimmer interviewed for head coaching jobs the last two offseasons, and interviewed with the Vikings and Tennessee Titans again this month, but he was a 14-year veteran coordinator of the NFL that people felt was deserving of a head coaching job for several years.

The Vikings finally gave him that opportunity.

"Fired up about Coach Zimmer! As a Cincy kid, he's been fun to watch there and can't wait to work with him! Welcome to the @Vikings!" tight end Kyle Rudolph tweeted.

Rudolph's friend, center John Sullivan, also entered his quick Twitter reaction on Zimmer: "Very excited to play for coach Zimmer and to see the staff that he puts together. #skolvikings"

Reaction from the other side of the move is coming from Cincinnati, where they also lost offensive coordinator Jay Gruden to the Washington Redskins.

"Gonna miss you coach Zimmer! Wish you nothing but the best in Minnesota," linebacker Rey Maualuga tweeted. "You brought out the best in each of your players! So honored to have been coached by you!"

Even begging wasn't beneath Zimmer's former players.

"Stay Coach #MikeZimmer. Cincy Loves & needs you!" defensive tackle Domata Peko tweeted. "But at the end the day it's all Business! You will be a great Head Coach for any NFL team!!"

Former players in the league also weighed in.

"Congrats to my dear friend and 1 of the best coaches I've EVER had Mike Zimmer!!! Well deserved and God bless. Truth," former Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders tweeted.

"Couldn't be happier for Mike Zimmer, great hire by MN," former Vikings quarterback Rich Gannon wrote. "No nonsense coach who is well respected by players and coaches alike!"
