Report: Peterson to have groin surgery
Peterson struggled with his groin injury for most of the second half of the 2013 season and met with Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Peterson missed the final two games in December because of foot and groin injuries. He decided last week not to play in the Pro Bowl because of the injuries.
"I'm going to do what's best for my body. If I'm not feeling like I'm healthy enough where I want to be to go, then I'm not playing," Peterson said of the Pro Bowl after the Vikings' final game of the regular season.
The recovery time is expected to be six to eight weeks.
Peterson finished the 2013 season with 1,266 yards after getting a franchise-record 2,097 yards rushing in 2012, which came up four yards short of the NFL single-season record. In the final four games, he rushed only 18 times and missed two of those games because of the injuries.
The groin injury wasn't the only setback for him in 2013.
Once the injuries started with a hamstring strain against the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 13, they never seemed to stop. After suffering hamstring, groin and foot injuries that limited his availability and sidelined him for two of the final three games, Peterson was typically optimistic following the regular-season finale.
"The body feels great, just the groin, the foot injury that took place, just slowed me down. But outside of that, the body feels good," he said. "The normal wear and tear, but nothing more so than my first year.
"My body is young. I've got a different body. My body recovers quickly. We'll see. I have a lot of time to rest now. I'll just try to enjoy it."
In all, Peterson missed 17 of the 33 final practices in 2013 once the injuries started in October. He was limited in seven additional practices.
