Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has opted to have surgery on his groin, according to ESPN.
Vikings RB Peterson has adductor surgery
The Vikings confirmed the surgery was performed by Dr. Williams Meyers at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia. The surgery was deemed a success, according to the Vikings, with a recovery period of six weeks.
Peterson struggled with his groin injury for most of the second half of the 2013 season and met with Meyers in Philadelphia on Wednesday to discuss his options.
Peterson missed the final two games in December because of foot and groin injuries. He decided last week not to play in the Pro Bowl because of the injuries.
"I'm going to do what's best for my body. If I'm not feeling like I'm healthy enough where I want to be to go, then I'm not playing," he said of the Pro Bowl after the Vikings' final game of the regular season.
Peterson finished the 2013 season with 1,266 yards after getting a franchise record 2,097 yards rushing in 2012, which came up four yards short of the NFL single-season record. In the final four games, he rushed only 18 times and missed two of those games because of the injuries.
He missed 17 of the 33 final practices in 2013 once the injuries started in October. He was limited in seven additional practices.
