Vikings sign big NT Joseph

Linval Joseph

The Vikings made their first splash in free agency Tuesday afternoon, signing New York Giants nose tackle Linval Joseph to a contract.

The Vikings addressed a couple of their in-house free-agent needs in the hours leading up to the official 3 p.m. Central start of free agency Tuesday. They landed another one about an hour after free agency started with the signing of Giants nose tackle Linval Joseph to what is being reported by ESPN as a five-year, $31.5 million deal.

Joseph, who is only 25 years old, was a priority for the Giants to re-sign, but, when the two sides couldn't come to an agreement prior to the official start of free agency, the Vikings made him an offer that was quickly accepted.

Joseph, who plays the nose tackle position much in the same way Pat Williams did with the Vikings for several years, is expected to be another line foundation piece alongside 2013 rookie Sharrif Floyd, who is expected to replace Kevin Williams at the defensive tackle position. Joseph is 6-foot-4, 323 pounds.

He played four seasons with the Giants, the last three as a primary starter. He recorded 175 tackles, including 59 in each of the last two seasons, and had seven sacks over the last two years, along with two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
