Patterson: ‘Overtraining’ caused foot injury

Cordarrelle Patterson said he injured his left foot by running too many routes while training in Los Angeles before training camp.

Cordarrelle Patterson said “overtraining” before training camp caused the left foot injury that has kept him out of practices in the first two days of training camp, but he’s getting closer to making his return.

Patterson said his training sessions in Los Angeles caused the pain in his foot and he called the Vikings’ director of sports medicine, Eric Sugarman, a couple days before reporting to training camp Thursday to inform him of the injury. Patterson and Sugarman’s training staff have been working on rehabilitating the injury ever since.

“I was just overtraining. I felt like I was running too many routes and just kept going. I tweaked my feet a little bit,” Patterson said Sunday.

“I’m still getting a lot of treatment – morning, afternoon, night, whatever it takes. I’m just trying to get it better.”

Patterson did some light running of routes during the team’s morning walk-through practice but wasn’t sure if he would participate in the afternoon practice, the Vikings’ first fully padded practice. More likely, his return to practice on a full-time basis is a day or two away.

“It’s tough. It’s real tough being on the sideline just watching guys do the things you wish you could do,” he said. “I’m out there and I’m getting mental reps. I felt like I’m not missing anything but working with those guys and getting the chemistry.

“I’ve just been trying to jog on it a little bit, just trying to get the feeling back because I’ve been out for a week now and just trying to get that feeling back over. I was out running today, doing a little more than I was yesterday.”
