Vikings Looking At No. 7 Options

Soon after the Vikings’ trade of Randy Moss to Oakland became public, the speculation started. With news from the combine, let the guessing games continue.

Even before the Minnesota Vikings traded wide receiver Randy Moss, head coach Mike Tice said at the conclusion of the 2004 season that the team would like to add another wide receiver. Whether he was foreshadowing the trade of Moss or not, that prediction is now a reality.

With this week’s developments, the speculation that the Vikings would choose a wide receiver early in the NFL draft heated up. The stove just got hotter in Indianapolis.

In his media interview, former Southern California wide receiver Mike Williams was asked about several teams in specific, including the Titans with the sixth pick in the draft, which would reunite him with his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow. But when Williams was asked about the possibility of replacing Moss in Minnesota with the seventh pick, he responded that he met with Tice last night.

"I wouldn’t be trying to fill Randy Moss’ shoes," Williams said, saying Moss’ shoes have their own fit.

After sitting out of football for one year, Williams will not be working out for scouts this weekend, but the 228-pounder said he runs a "legit" 4.45 in the 40-yard dash. Williams tried to enter the draft last year, but after hiring an agent he was turned down. He was later denied access to return to USC and has been preparing for this process ever since.

He is passing on the combine opportunity this weekend because he said he wants his own day to have scouts focusing on what he can do. The Vikings will surely be interested in attending his pro day on March at the University of Southern Florida.
