Vikings Release Mixon, Others

The Vikings made a number of roster moves since the 2005 NFL Draft officially ended, with the most significant being the release of veteran defensive end Kenny Mixon.

One day after completing their draft and with their depth improved, the Vikings released defensive end Kenny Mixon. The move was facilitated by the rising status of second-year pro Darrion Scott and the drafting of first-rounder Erasmus James.

Mixon started 14 games for the Vikings last year, serving a two-game suspension following a drunk driving conviction earlier in 2004. The suspension cost Mixon $306,000 of game pay last year. It likely also contributed to his release today.

Mixon signed with the Vikings as a free agent in 2002 and immediately became a starter. Last year, he registered 58 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Vikings also released linebacker Mike Nattiel and wide receiver Blake Elliott.
