Vikings Release CB Ward
Ward was added to the team's practice squad late last year, spending the final four weeks of the season on the developmental squad. But with the changes in the coaching staff and players, Ward had fallen on the depth chart.
The former Northwestern Wildcat had tried to catch on with the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears before landing in Minnesota as a rookie free agent last year.
This year, however, the depth in the defensive backfield has been building. Last year's third-round draft choice, Dustin Fox, has made the switch from safety to cornerback and the Vikings drafted Cedric Griffin with the first of their three second-round picks in the 2006 draft, further deepening the strength in the secondary. In addition, Dovonte Edwards has remained a strong candidate for the role of nickel back.
After starters Antoine Winfield and Fred Smoot, the depth at cornerback was furthered enhanced this offseason with the signings of undrafted rookies Charles Gordon of Kansas and R.J. Cobbs of Massachusetts, veteran free agent Ronyell Whitaker of Tampa Bay, along with first-year pro Ukee Dozier, formerly of the Minnesota Gophers.
All of that depth spelled doom for Ward.
Ward was signed by the Bills following the 2005 draft, later released, then joined the Chicago Bears. The Bears released him before the start of the 2005 season.
