The Saints' magical season came to an end last Sunday, and, if reports VU is hearing out of the Big Easy are true, it could be the last game for wide receiver Joe Horn as a member of the Saints -- which could make him a candidate to be a potential No. 1 receiver with the Vikings.
It’s clear that the Vikings are going to overhaul their receivers corps between now and when training camp opens in late July.
has already been released, whispers out of Winter Park have it that neither
are likely to be back, and
has been a monumental disappointment.
While the focus of many fans has been on the draft because of a shortage of top-end free agent wide receivers, VU has been told about a big name that could surface in the comings weeks or months.
was a rallying point for many Saints fans, but, as the team cleaned out its lockers for the season following their NFC Championship Game loss to the Bears, Horn made it clear that he believes he still has a lot to offer and isn’t sure the Saints will be where his future takes him. Horn, who is set to make $4 million next year, has been slowed with injuries the last two seasons, but said he believes he can still play at a Pro Bowl level. He also made it clear that he will not accept a pay cut and, if the team holds firm, he’s willing to accept his release and move on elsewhere.
With a dearth of young talent at wide receiver and the omnipresent
serving as a breakaway receiving threat from the running back spot, the Saints have a lot of depth and talent and Horn’s $4 million salary doesn’t seem to be a perfect fit, especially if he is unwilling to take a pay cut to stay in New Orleans. The Saints dumped
last year and he became a go-to receiver for the Eagles. The Vikings may end up in a similar position with Horn.
While there’s no immediate word if the Vikings have any interest in a player like Horn, what is certain is that the wide receiver corps needs a lot of revamping and the group we see in 2007 may bear little resemblance to the group from 2006. If Horn could become available, he could be a big missing piece to that puzzle for the Vikings.
* Whether a sign of things to come or just a coincidence, Matt Millen and some of the Lions staff took offensive tackle
of Wisconsin out to dinner. When asked by a member of the local Detroit media where the Lions were looking as far as rookie talent is concerned, offensive coordinator Mike Martz said “everywhere … except quarterback.” If that’s the case, the Lions might not have the interest in
that many have believed the team will have with the second overall pick in the draft.
* One of the wide receivers the Vikings might have pursued during free agency was taken off the board Tuesday when the Lions re-signed
to a contract. Furrey, who followed Martz over from St. Louis, led the NFC with 98 receptions in 2006.
* Russ Grimm, who was beaten out by Mike Tomlin as the new head coach of the Steelers, has signed on with the Cardinals, joining former Steelers assistant Ken Whisenhunt. Grimm has been named assistant head coach.
* As part of the coaching changeover with the Cardinals, offensive line coach and former Vikings offensive coordinator Steve Loney had his contract terminated by the team.
* Offensive tackle
, who briefly spent some time with the Vikings, was one of seven players signed by the Patriots off their practice squad.
* Former Vikings wide receiver Ryan Hoag was one of five players allocated by the Redskins to NFL Europe Tuesday.
