NFL Free Agents
Doss Signs with Vikings
Posted Apr 4, 2007
The Vikings have agreed to terms with free-agent safety Mike Doss this morning. See what the safety had to say about the signing.
The Vikings signed free-agent safety Mike Doss Wednesday morning.
Doss has started 42 games with the
during his four-year career, but he was placed on injured reserve after six games last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
In that time, he has 254 tackles and seven interceptions during regular-season action with the defending Super Bowl champs, who also won the past four AFC South titles.
He had already visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and he had a visit lined up Wednesday with the Philadelphia Eagles, but his visit with Vikings coach Brad Childress and his familiarity with new defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who was an assistant for the Colts the last two seasons, helped convince Doss that Minnesota was the right fit for him.
“Really it came down to feeling comfortable with the situation,” Doss told Viking Update. “Of course, Leslie Frazier was a coach in Indianapolis the last two seasons and he’s the new coordinator here. I’ve had a history with the Vikings since growing up. My first football team was the Canton midget league Vikings. It just kind of came full circle for me.
“Knowing that I would be able to come into the situation, a young team on the move, on the rise – and having the opportunity to talk with Coach Childress and see what his vision, his forecast for the team, would be – I liked what I heard and what I was seeing around here for the last 24 hours.”
While it only took 24 hours for Doss to become convinced that signing a one-year deal worth a reported $1 million was right for him, the Vikings had been expressing an interest in him for about a month, he said. But before he could make too many visits, he had to strengthen his injured knee to the point that teams would be satisfied it was making enough progress.
“I always felt that the Vikings organization was a team waiting in the wings for me and that the timing would be right,” Doss said.
Adding another veteran presence to a crowded safety position was part of the reasoning Childress gave in a statement.
“Mike has been a winner throughout his career and he gives us a veteran presence,” Childress said. “It’s always important to add quality football players to the roster. He’s won a national championship and been part of a Super Bowl winner. That’s experience you can’t take for granted.”
Doss has a 38-13 record in games he played for the Colts and has one playoff interception.
At Ohio State, he was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2002, the year the Buckeyes won the national championship, and was named an All-America along with being a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award as the top collegiate defensive back in the country. The Colts made him their second-round pick (the 58th player selected overall) in 2003.
