Sixth-round linebacker Rufus Alexander becomes the third Vikings draft pick to sign...

>Alexander signed; Burnett, Hall, Hamilton waived
Sixth-round pick LB Rufus Alexander is the third draftee to sign, while the team trimmed it's roster looking ahead to training camp.  Alexander has an excellent chance to secure a backup weakside linebacker spot, especially if he can contribute on special teams.  Burnett might have a better chance elsewhere, as the Vikings are very deep at safety with proven veterans Darren Sharper, Dwight Smith, Tank Williams, Mike Doss and second-year man Greg Blue all ahead of him.  Two other prospects, Andre Maddox and Chad Johnson, also have a better chance.  Burnett has some ability, but he was never going to move up in the current situation in Minnesota.  Hall is a hard worker but lacks the athleticism to make it as a Cover-2 linebacker.  The Vikings took a look at Hamilton, but quickly decided they had better prospects in-house already.

>NFL preseason power rankings
The Vikings come in at No. 21 in this analysis.  On the bright side, that’s up five spots from where they finished last season.  AP, the defense and Mike Doss are positives.  T-Jack’s the big question mark.  (411mania.com)

>Good guy Loney lands on his feet
When he was an assistant coach with the Vikings under Mike Tice, he was one of the truly nicest and classiest guys there was.  So it’s nice to see Steve Loney land on his feet again as the new interim head football coach at Drake.  (DesMoinesRegister)

>Patrick ready for supplemental draft
The Vikings were among teams in attendance at the individual workout for Nebraska offensive lineman Chris Patrick yesterday.  He checked in at 6-4 ½, 296 pounds.  He ran a 5.3 forty, a 4.50 short-shuttle time and did 31 reps at 225 pounds.  Patrick, who played left tackle for the Cornhuskers, projects inside to guard in the NFL.  Someone could take a flyer on Patrick with a late-round pick.  (JournalStar) (Rotoworld)

Former Viking OG Brent Boyd will join Pro Football Hall of Famers Mike Ditka and Harry Carson as well as former Oakland Raiders lineman Curt Marsh to testify before congress about the physical afteraffects of playing in the NFL.  (nctimes)

>A blast from the past:  DE Ray Yakovonis
A seventh-round pick by the Vikings in 1980, Ray Yakovonis is still involved in football, as a high school defensive line coach.  (TimesLeader)
