>Tank gets a second chance in secondary
A nasty broken kneecap early in training camp last season wiped out his first season with the Vikings, but Tank Williams is back and ready to make the most of another chance.

>Crowded depth chart squeezes out Maddox
The deep secondary is crowded.  Veterans Darren Sharper and Dwight Smith are solid.  Second-year man Greg Blue has potential.  Tank Williams and the added Mike Doss are both healthy, so the Vikings released free agent safety Andre Maddox.  Maddox was originally a fifth-round pick by the New York Jets in 2005.   OL Adam O'Connor was added to the roster.

>Fantasy report:  Vikings
The top Vikings for fantasy football according to this FOXSports.com report will be Chester Taylor, Adrian Peterson and Troy Williamson.

>Leber joins Mike Morris on the Power Trip
Vikings linebacker Ben Leber called into KFAN this morning to talk football.  He dreads the rigors of training camp.  He says no glitches in the transition to new defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.  He also outlines his role in the Tampa-2 scheme.  Other topics:  Chad Greenway, E.J. moving back inside, the big boys up front and more.

>Ex-Viking Reviez honored
Former Vikings kicker Fuad Reveiz is among the 2007 Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame Inductees, and will be honored next Thursday evening, July 12, in Knoxville Convention Center in Tennessee.  In the twilight of his career with the Vikings, Reveiz set the NFL consecutive field goal record (since broken) at 31, starting in 1995 into 1996.  Reveiz, now 44, was forced to retire in 1997 after a third surgery on his left ankle, the plant ankle for his kicks, didn’t heal properly.

>More positive PR for AP
The Vikings haven’t had as popular a first-round draft pick like Adrian Peterson since Randy Moss, but without any of the off-the-field baggage or character concerns.  This post says, “Peterson just may be the most talented back ever to wear a Vikings’ jersey.  He is a beautiful combination of speed, power, passion, vision, balance and explosiveness.  He was the most talented player in the draft.”

>Position by position showdown:  vets vs. rookies
This post on the Rube Chat highlights the training camp battles at just about every position on the Vikings.  It gets the ball rolling on the debate.

>McKinnie pulled in a mountain of money in ‘06
Vikings offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie pulled in the third-highest amount of money ($17.5 million) in 2006, according to this USA Today story.  Most of that was in signing bonus money as part of his new long-term contract with the Vikings.  There’s also a searchable, sortable salary database from this story.  Here’s the link to the Vikings’ 2006 salaries.

>Vikings add training camp depth, sign OL O’Connor
The Vikings added OL Adam O’Connor to the roster on Monday, signing the former NFL Europe player from William & Mary.  O’Connor spent some time on the Carolina Panthers practice squad last year and recently finished up the season with the Hamburg Sea Devils in the now-defunct NFL Europe, where he started every game at left tackle.  He can play tackle or guard.  O’Connor was actually a defensive end in college, where he recorded 170 tackles, 35 tackles-for-loss, 16.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 pass defended.  O’Connor has some size (6-7, 300), athletic ability and is coming off a pretty solid NFL Europe campaign.

>NFL rookie report
After seeing their first pro action in mini camp and OTA workouts, the transition from college to the pros has begun.  Here’s a preview of some of the top rookies entering the league this year, including the Vikings' Adrian Peterson, and what to expect.  “Adrian Peterson had a great first few practices standing out amongst the other rookies,” according to Matt Cardenas.  “Coaches saw a good combination of vision and speed, but were most impressed with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.”

>Owens hosts “Faith Football Camp” in hometown
Vikings tight end Richard Owens hosted the “Richard Owens Faith Football Camp” on June 25 in his hometown at Middleburgh (Fla.) High School.  Vikings running back Ciatrick Fason also helped out.  Owens is one of many Viking players who are very involved in the community.

>Tarkenton, Cunningham on upcoming NFL Network feature
This Wednesday, July 4, there will be a feature on NFL Network on the Top 10 Mobile Quarterbacks, including two that played with the Vikings – Fran Tarkenton (photo) and Randall Cunningham (photo).

>Tank under legal limit at .072…big deal
It hardly cries of innocence.  Former Chicago Bears’ DT Tank Johnson (photo, appropriately enough, with an attorney) wasn’t legally drunk when he was pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving June 22 in Arizona.  Big deal!  A guy that was already on double-secret probation by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell , was drinking and then driving – driving 15 miles per hour over the 25 mph zone speed limit at 3:30 a.m.  Tank might have been “legally” under the limit in Arizona of .08 percent, but at .072, speeding, in the wee hours of the morning means the kid still doesn’t get it.  No matter how talented, these are the kinds of guys the Vikings have been trying to weed out in their organization.

>Ex-Vikings in the Arena Football League
There are a few former Viking players now playing in the Arena Football League.  WR Ben Nelson, who spent 2003 and 2004 on the Vikings’ practice squad, is with the San Jose SaberCats.  OG Ed Ta’amu, a fourth-round pick by the Vikings in 2002, is with the Kansas City Brigage.  PK Todd France, who went to training camp with the Vikings in 2002 and 2003, is with the Philadelphia Soul.  DT Devin Wyman, who spent time in camp with the Vikings in 1998, is a four-year AFL veteran with the Dallas Desperados.  OT William Obeng, who was in training camp with the Vikings in 2005, is with the San Jose SaberCats.  WR Siaha Burley, who went to training camp with the Vikings in 2005, is a six-year veteran of the AFL and currently with the Utah Blaze.
