Veteran Quarterback Addition Unlikely
Brad Childress

Vikings coach Brad Childress said adding another veteran quarterback to the mix before training camp isn’t likely, but he’s keeping the scouting reports ready if necessary in case “stuff happens.”
Despite recent speculation the Vikings are looking to add a veteran quarterback before training camp, Brad Childress said this is not the case.
Not right now at least.
The Vikings’ coach admitted the team has been exploring potential options if it becomes necessary, but the plan is to open training camp with
Tarvaris Jackson
and
Brooks Bollinger
as his top two quarterbacks.
Drew Henson
and seventh-round pick
Tyler Thigpen
will compete for the No. 3 job.
“I doubt whether it would change before camp,” Childress said. “I don’t think people are making a lot of changes right now. Everybody is kind of standing pat. You see as you go. (But) as you know, stuff happens.”
That “stuff” likely would be a potential injury or subpar performance by Jackson or Bollinger. One of the reasons the topic came up is because Philadelphia quarterback
Kelly Holcomb
indicated to one media outlet that a move to the Vikings “makes sense.”
Holcomb is familiar with the Eagles system - Childress is Philadelphia’s former offensive coordinator - and he’s also behind
Donovan McNabb
,
A.J. Feeley
and rookie
Kevin Kolb
on the depth chart entering camp.
Childress did not deny the Vikings are constantly assessing NFL personnel.
“It’s an endless process,” he said. “Our personnel room has names all over the wall. Whether it’s the wide receiver position, the offensive line position, defensive line, or guys that you might call ‘people of interest.’ We talk about all of those guys every day. Those are ongoing personnel discussions. Quarterback is no different.”
CAMP CALENDAR: Players will report July 25 and begin practicing on July 27 in Mankato, Minn. The team will practice against the
Kansas City Chiefs
on Aug. 3 in Mankato and the following day against the Chiefs in River Falls, Wis. The Vikings’ last day of practice in Mankato will be on Aug. 15.
NOTES
Childress plans to give offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell a chance to call some plays during unscripted portions of training camp practices. No decision has been made for the regular season. Childress called plays last year, but he’s made it clear he might want to scale back so he can pay attention to more areas of the team.
First-round running back
Adrian Peterson
will undergo one more examination on his left collarbone before training-camp practices begin on Friday. Peterson, who broke the collarbone last season playing for
Oklahoma
, won’t be examined until after he signs a contract.
Defensive end
Erasmus James
, whose 2006 season came to an early end when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, could begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list.
Nose tackle
Pat Williams
began training camp last year on PUP after he reported weighing more than 337 pounds - the weight the team wanted him at. That won’t be a problem this year. Williams is 320 pounds and passed the Vikings’ mandatory conditioning test a week early.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “Tarvaris has done everything he can to put himself in position for this as has Brooks (Bollinger). I can’t say enough about those two guys. But you can’t put a premium on all the snaps they are going to get in camp, with the pass rush bearing down on them.” - Vikings coach Brad Childress admitting he’s looking forward to getting a good look at his top two quarterbacks in training camp.
