Fred Evans came to the Vikings with two criminal cases pending in two different states. Earlier today, he cut that number in half.

New Vikings defensive tackle Fred Evans reached a plea agreement this morning in a Dade County Court in Miami, pleading no contest to two felony charges involving resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

Under the deal, Evans will serve no jail time, but will be charged $1,310 for court costs. The judge is without jurisdiction on the terms of his probation and, if Evans has a probation violation during the term for which he will be assigned, both of the felony counts will come back into play and he will face the sentencing guidelines given to those crimes.

With this case resolved, Evans still has a case pending in Texas, where he has been ordered to appear Sept. 5 to face marijuana possession charges. If Evans fails to appear for the hearing, an arrest warrant will be issued and, if he travels with the team for their game at Dallas, he will be arrested. However, it is likely another plea agreement can be reached, since the courts rarely give stiff penalties for misdemeanor pot possession anymore.

Once that case is resolved, Evans could face the wrath of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has taken a hard-line stance on player misconduct. With a 1-2 punch of legal problems that Evans has had – much less involving drugs and cop-punching – a suspension isn’t just possible, it’s likely.
