Key matchup:  K. Williams vs. Coston

One of the key matchups to watch when the Vikings are on defense against the Packers this weekend will be All-Pro defensive tackle Kevin Williams when he lines up against third-year right guard Junius Coston (pronounced JOON-ee-us KAHST-in).

Coston has bounced around as a backup along the Packers offensive line but became the starting right guard when Jason Spitz was out with a strained calf.  Now Spitz is healthy, but Coston will still start .

Williams has had a strong start this season and should be able to cause some trouble against the younger Green Bay offensive linemen this Sunday.  So keep on eye on the action when Williams (#93) faces Coston (#62).

Patience needed with Jackson

It seems the bandwagon got pretty light after second-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson suffered through his first four-interception performance two weeks ago, and now many have jumped ship on the young, but promising prospect in search of some journeyman, quick-fix band aid.

Folks, this was to be expected.  Just about every quarterback that ever succeeded at this level struggled in their early starts.  Some of the greatest QBs in NFL history struggled in their first few starts, including the legendary Brett Favre whom the Vikings will face this Sunday.

Jackson will show flashes, and he will make more mistakes, but he’s a smart kid with all the physical tools.  He will learn from his mistakes and get better and better.

History might show that many young, developing quarterbacks don’t really start to put it all together until their third year in the league.  But Jackson is going to have to endure his second year in the league to get there first.

Allison will still return kickoffs

Despite some hesitation on a couple returns last week, the Viking coaches have indicated they will stick with rookie wide receiver Aundrae Allison on kickoff returns.

Allison did not have extensive experience on kickoff returns in college at East Carolina, but he has shown excellent skills for the job during the preseason and in taking his first kickoff return back 60 yards against the Lions a couple weeks ago.

He possesses the burst, the sustained speed and the vision to eventually break one if the blocking is there.  The Vikings feel he will only improve with continued experience.
