Holcomb set for second start with Vikings

Kelly Holcomb took all the snaps with the first-team offense in Friday’s walk-through practice that was open to the media.  He will start this week against the Packers.

The lingering effects of the groin injury to starter Tarvaris Jackson remain obvious and with the bye week coming, it makes the most sense to go with the veteran once again this week.

For the short-term, the Vikings could actually be better with Holcomb than Jackson.  There’s no replacement for the experience Holcomb brings to the offense.  But in the long run, Childress remains committed to the long-term development of Jackson as the team’s starting quarterback.

Holcomb can and likely will play better in his second start with the Vikings.  He did a nice job of protecting the ball last week against Kansas City, but was probably too conservative on a handful of plays and just a bit off the mark on one potential scoring strike opportunity to ex-Packer Robert Ferguson.

If he can shake that rust and be a bit more decisive, the offense could show more flashes like their opening drive a week ago, instead of the next nine.

Childress calling out his assistants?

According to some published reports, Vikings head coach Brad Childress wants his assistants to step up.

At issue are too many questionable substitutions and conservative play calls last week at Kansas City.

There’s no question that the team can improve everywhere.  Players have missed opportunities on the field to make plays that were very well designed and put them in situations to succeed.  But there have also been some glitches that have the look of shortcomings with coaching, particularly in the area game management and game adjustment.

Throwback uniforms this Sunday

Here’s a look (photo) at the throwback uniforms the Vikings will wear this Sunday against Green Bay.  Wide receiver Bobby Wade models the current next to the throwback version.

Extra Points

It’s official: Holcomb will indeed start at quarterback, and Chester Taylor and Troy Williamson will play this week, according to Childress.

Vernand Morency is likely to start for the Packers at running back, with rookie Brandon Jackson most likely inactive.  “His shin has gotten worse,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said according to jsonline.com.  “He feels worse today than he did yesterday.  I'm just glad that Vernand also feels good.”

Packers center Scott Wells reportedly tweaked his hamstring in practice on Thursday but is listed as probable for the Vikings.  His opponent much of the afternoon will be Pro Bowl nose tackle Pat Williams, so this could be a favorable matchup for the Vikings.

Rookie running back Adrian Peterson is now among those featured players with photos that rotate on the team’s official web page.  They’ve also added some newer shots of other players like Matt Birk, Steve Hutchinson, Chester Taylor, Bobby Wade, Antoine Winfield, etc.  Hit refresh on your browser and you’ll see the pics in the upper right change.

Ex-Vikings defensive tackle Cedric Killings was discharged from a hospital in Houston on Friday.  Killings wore a neck brace during a news conference but was able to walk out of the hospital.  He suffered a serious vertebrae injury in last week’s game with the Houston Texans and is out of the season as a result.  Thankfully, he’s okay, as he walked onto the Texans' practice field Friday to the surprise and delight of his teammates.  Killings spent a couple seasons (2002-03) with the Vikings as a reserve.
