With the clock ticking down to the start of training camp, the Vikings have yet to sign any of their five draft picks.
With the days counting down to training camp, the Vikings have yet to sign any of their draft picks. Considering that the team had just one pick in the first four rounds and no first-round pick, it was assumed that the Vikings would break from tradition and get some of them signed early. Thus far, that hasn’t happened.
Word out of Winter Park is that the Vikings expect to get all of their draft picks signed before players report to Mankato Thursday. While other teams have signed all of their picks and many more have signed all but their first-round picks, the Vikings continue to seemingly be dragging their feet in terms of getting players signed.
Typically, draft signings start at the bottom and work their way up to the top. The Vikings have just five draftees to sign – second-round safety
Tyrell Johnson
, fifth-round QB
John David Booty
and DT
Letroy Guion
and sixth-round center
John Sullivan
and WR
Jaymar Johnson
.
None of the Vikings rookies are expected to make a big immediate impact. Tyrell Johnson is expected to back up
Darren Sharper
and
Madieu Williams
, Booty will enter camp as the No. 3 quarterback, Guion will try to earn a roster spot behind
Kevin Williams
and
Pat Williams
, Sullivan will back up
Matt Birk
and Jaymar Johnson will be fighting for a roster spot in a crowded crop of wide receivers.
Expect the flurry of signings to begin any day now.
SATURDAY NOTES
Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and linebacker
Chad Greenway
spent their Friday in Iowa City helping in the relief effort for flood victims of the June storms that devastated much of the area. Several Vikings fans and about 30 members of the Iowa Hawkeyes football team joined in the cleanup effort. Greenway played his college ball for Iowa and still has some longstanding ties with the school. Approximately 20 buildings on the campus sustained some form of damage that will require repairs.
In addition to helping out with some of the physical cleanup, Greenway and the Vikings organization made a $30,000 donation to the United Way of Johnson County Flood Relief Fund.
Adrian Peterson
conducted a youth football clinic with members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twins Cities Friday.
Former Viking
Troy Williamson
appears to be locking in on the No. 3 receiver job with the Jaguars. Matt Jones, arrested earlier this month on felony cocaine possession charges, may well be cut and projected starter
Jerry Porter
is going to need surgery for a torn hamstring.
