The quarterback saga drags on

The Vikings continue to win despite an uncertain situation at quarterback, and head coach Brad Childress isn’t about to clear things up for the opponents by naming a starter early in the week.

Another week, more questions about the Vikings’ starting quarterback situation.

Coming off the best game of his career, Tarvaris Jackson is making a strong case to start Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. But, if Gus Frerotte is ready, should the starting job remain his?

Brad Childress isn’t talking. When asked Monday about the QB situation, Childress said he would discuss the matter with the players first before going public with his decision. That could be some time, since Childress is under no obligation to announce a starting quarterback. If he can get the Falcons to spend time game-planning for both, all the better.

“I don’t know that I won’t name him the starter, but I don’t have to do that today and I won’t do that today,” Childress said.

Expect Childress to wait to make the call until later in the week, as Jackson will likely continue to take the lion’s share of the first-team reps.

"I would say certainly in the last game and a half he’s looked extremely decisive,” Childress said. “I just don’t see a lot of hesitancy back there. Really you want to be able to formulate the decisions you’re making as you drop away from center and let the football go. I see him being able to do that. He’s directing the run offense from side to side, where we want to go. I just think I see a brighter-eyed, more well-rounded guy for whatever reason. Whether it’s the time, whether it’s sitting back and watching; whether it’s set of events that he didn’t care for. But obviously, when you get a second chance you want to make the most of it and he’s done a great job with that."

TUESDAY NOTES

  • Bernard Berrian entered a pretty exclusive club Sunday. Only three players in history have scored on touchdown on a pass reception and a punt return in one quarter in NFL history – Pete Pihos of the Eagles in 1947, J.T. Smith of the Chiefs in 1980 and Berrian – according to ESPN.com.

  • The Pro Bowl teams will be named at 3 p.m. local time today.

  • Thanks to Arizona’s unwillingness to run the ball Sunday, the Vikings moved into the No. 1 spot in the league in run defense.

  • Borderline Hall of Famer Edgerrin James was suited up for Sunday’s game but never saw the field for a play.

  • Former Viking and current Steeler Mitch Berger claimed following Sunday’s game with Baltimore that Ravens CB Frank Walker spit in his face, which Berger claims went in his mouth. Berger also accused Walker of trying to intentionally injure kicker Jeff Reed.
