Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, helping bolster a position that had been getting thin due to free agency and injuries.

Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp re-signed with the Vikings on Tuesday, inking a two-year deal worth up to $4.2 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed, according to what a league source told Scout.com’s Adam Caplan. Sapp will receive $1.9 million of that in the first year of the deal.

Sapp becomes the team’s second unrestricted free agent to re-sign with the Vikings, joining wide receiver Greg Lewis, who got a deal done before free agency started.

Sapp could have an opportunity to start at the beginning of the 2010 season, depending on what happens in the rest of free agency and the draft, because starting right cornerback Cedric Griffin tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the NFC Championship Game and may not be ready for the season opener.

Of course, filling in for injured starters is nothing new for Sapp. He was the replacement for six games during the 2009 season when Antoine Winfield couldn’t play because of a fractured foot. During that time, Sapp had 25 tackles, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

He made a career-high seven starts in 2009, setting a career mark with 55 tackles. He played in about 60 percent of the team’s defensive snaps, according to a league source. He also had five tackles on special teams last year.

In his previous five years, Sapp had started only 10 games total (four of those coming in 2008), but he became a regular in the Vikings’ nickel defense in 2008 and stepped into the starting role more often than ever in 2009.

For his career, Sapp has four interceptions. He has played in 86 regular-season games, starting 17.

The Vikings have now lost two unrestricted free agents (Chester Taylor and Artis Hicks), re-signed Sapp and Lewis, and also added kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd so far in free agency. They elected to not to tender restricted free-agent cornerback Karl Paymah last week.
