Jared Allen golf tourney helping wounded veterans

Jared Allen’s new foundation, Homes for Wounded Warriors, is just beginning the building stages, but the fundraising starts with a golf tournament in less than a month.

Allen said the foundation just recently was approved for non-profit status and now the fundraising begins with a golf tournament on July 10 at Ancala Country Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. But, just like Allen is no ordinary defensive end, this is no ordinary golf tournament.

In keeping with a military theme, Allen’s golf tournament is being dubbed the “Night-Ops Charity Golf Tournament.” Nine holes will be played during the day, followed by a pig roast, barbeque and beverages, a silent auction and a “sniper” $1 million hole in one opportunity. Then come the final nine holes at night.

Homes for Wounded Warriors was created for the sole purpose of raising money to build or modify the homes of America's injured military veterans so that they are handicap accessible and comfortable. All branches of the military are supported. Allen formed the non-profit after he returned home from his USO trip to U.S. military bases in the Middle East.

“Jared Allen was moved by the commitment, dedication, and sacrifices that our soldiers make everyday to protect our freedom,” said the tournament’s web site. “He wanted to say thank you to every soldier in the only way that Jared Allen knows how, by embracing the conflict and making a positive life-changing difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

Allen’s military roots run deep. His grandfather, Ray Allen, was a Marine for 23 years who served in World War II. His uncle was a medic who served in Iraq. And his younger brother, Ronald, Jr. joined the Marine Corps last year.

Sponsorships or donations for the tournament, along with all the registration details are available online. Greens fees range from $150, which is heavily discounted for military personnel, to $500 for civilians.

Favre surgery went well; decision few weeks off

There were no complications with Brett Favre’s ankle surgery, which cleaned out scar tissue and bone spurs last month, but the quarterback still hasn’t made a decision on whether or not he’ll play football this season.

Those were the two big news items from an Associated Press report out of Charlotte, N.C., where Dr. James Andrews was speaking to the Charlotte Touchdown Club on Wednesday.

Andrew said Favre will need a few more weeks of rehabilitation before he’s at the point of making a decision on his football future. Andrews performed the surgery on May 21 and the expected timetable at that point was about six weeks, so it appears he is right on track.

Triplett contract details

Nate Triplett is now making a livable wage … and more if he can make the Vikings’ roster. The second of the Vikings’ two fifth-round draft picks signed his contract Monday and Scout.com’s Adam Caplan has the details.

Triplett signed a four-year deal, which is standard for a fifth-round pick, and got a signing bonus just over $152,000. Triplett was the 167th player selected.

Last year’s 167th pick, offensive tackle Herman Johnson, who was selected by the Arizona Cardinals, received a $148,500 bonus. Triplett’s bonus represents an increase of about 2.5 percent over Johnson’s deal.

Triplett’s base salaries call for payments of $320,000 in 2010, $405,000 in 2011, $490,000 in 2012 and $575,000 in 2013.

The total value of Triplett’s base salaries and signing bonus are roughly $1.942 million.
