Biography:
The Vikings made a terrific move in picking up veteran middle linebacker Greg Biekert, who was released by the Oakland Raiders in what was primarily a cost-cutting move. Biekert was acquired on Sept. 3, 2002, and started the Vikings’ season opener five days later.

A tremendous leader, Biekert was the heart and soul of the Raiders' defense before coming to Minnesota and became just that for the Vikings in 2002.

2003: Appeared to have lost a step, but still had 107 tackles. Was replaced on passing down by rookie E.J. Henderson as the season wore on. Made his 121 consecutive start in Week 16. Has not missed a game in 11 NFL seasons.

2002: Led the Vikings with 147 tackles and four interceptions, including two against Green Bay (11/17). Started every game, and quickly established himself as a leader that gets defenses lined up properly.

2001: Led Oakland with 108 tackles, and added four sacks.

Previous years: Led Oakland in tackles from 1998-2001. After being drafted in the seventh round of the 1993 draft, Biekert spent nine years in Oakland before being released in 2002 as a salary-cap move and to make room for first-round draft choice Napolean Harris. Has 16 career sacks.

College: Was a four-year letterman at Colorado, where he was a Butkus Award finalist after posting 137 tackles his senior year. Finished his college career as the Buffaloes’ leader in solo tackles (280) and second in total tackles (441).

Personal: Born in Iowa City, Iowa, and played high school ball at Longmont (Colo.) High, where he also earned two letters as a wrestler. Married with three daughters.
