| Biography: |
| Brian Russell RFA Vikings – He signed as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2001 season and spent that year on the practice squad. He won a job as a backup the follow year and Russell also played on special teams. Russell won the starting free safety job prior to the start of the 2003 season and has been in that role ever since. Russell plays a smart game and is instinctive but lacks good range and cover skills and he’s susceptible to the big play. He’s also not aggressive enough against the run.
If Brian Russell’s story seems similar to Robert Griffith’s bio, that’s because it is. At least until the part where Griffith becomes a Pro Bowl player. Both went to San Diego State, and the two worked out together before Russell ever became a Viking. Like Griffith, Russell came to the Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent. Eventually, he got the chance to start in 2002, but Russell couldn’t hold that position.
2002: Started two games at strong safety and played in all 16 during his first season on the active roster. Finished with 16 tackles on defense and 15 on special teams.
2001: Spent the entire season on the practice squad.
College: Made the switch from quarterback to safety during his junior season at San Diego State. Played 11 games at free safety his senior year, registering 68 tackles, fourth on the team.
