| Biography: |
Named the sixth head coach in Vikings history on January 10, 2002, Tice has
been associated with the Vikings since 1992. He was a tight end in the NFL,
starting with the Seattle Seahawk (1981-88) and the Washington Redskins (1989)
before going back to the Seahawks (1990-91) and the Vikings (1992-93, 1995).
Tice started his coaching career the year after he finished his playing career
with the Vikings. He coached tight ends in 1996 and moved to the offensive line
from 1997-2001, being named assistant head coach for the 2001 season. He became
interim head coach for the final game of the 2001 season before being named
the full-time head coach three days after his head-coaching debut.
As an offensive line coach, Tice gained the reputation of being tough but
fair with his pupils. In his five years as coach of that unit, he finished with
none of the same players he inherited in 1997, but he ended up coaching five
different players to 10 Pro Bowl appearances. It started with Randall McDaniel
and continued with Jeff Christy, Todd Steussie, Korey Stringer and Matt Birk.
Birk was named to his second Pro Bowl appearance in 2002 and was the only Viking
chosen for the 2001 season. Tice's offensive line was also part of the Vikings'
record-breaking 1998 season.
As a player, Tice was converted from a quarterback coming out of Maryland
in 1980 to a tight end. He caught a career-high four touchdown passes with Seattle
in 1991and a career-high 29 receptions in 1988. He also helped the Seahawks
to the AFC Championship Game in 1983.
Tice was born in Bayshore, N.Y. on Feb. 2, 1959 and attended Central Islip
High School in Long Island, where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse.
He was the winner of the Byron "Whizzer" White Humanitarian Award
in 1987. His brother John coaches tight ends for the Vikings, and Mike and wife
Diane have two children, Adrienne and Nathan, the latter who says his dad "yells
a lot" while coaching junior high football.
