Biography:
Rarely has the spotlight been focused so brightly on one player, but that was the situation for Daunte Culpepper in 2000. He entered the season as then head coach Dennis Green’s chosen one after failed attempts to get Jeff George re-signed and/or Randall Cunningham at a reduced salary.

So, with that as a backdrop and almost no regular-season experience, the second-year quarterback produced shining numbers and a trip to the NFC Championship game. He suffered a season-ending knee injury late in 2001 and struggled mightily with turnovers in 2002. Without the staggering number of turnovers, he could have been a Pro Bowl quarterback in 2002, which was exactly what he did in 2003 and 2004.

Entering 2005, he ranks third in NFL history with a career passer rating of 93.2, and fourth in league annals with his single-season rating of 110.9. His 18,598 career yards ranks third in team history.

2004: Set the NFL record with 5,123 combined passing-rushing yards, breaking Dan Marino’s mark from 1984. Led the league with 4,717 passing yards. Ranked second in the NFL with 39 TDs thrown. Set team records in passing yards and TDs. Had a 60-percent completion mark in 14 games. Had three games with five touchdowns. Posted the second-best passer rating of his career at 147.1 in the season opener. Didn’t thrown an interception in nine games.

2003: Named the starter for the NFC in the Pro Bowl after limiting his turnovers and playing a more efficient game. Completed 65 percent of his passes with 25 TDs and 11 interceptions. Finished with a 96.4 passer rating (leading the NFC) and 422 yards and four touchdowns rushing. Named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September. Set a team record by completing over 60 percent of his passes in 10 games.

2002: Despite a terrible year for turnovers (he led the NFL in interceptions and fumbles), Culpepper proved to be durable, starting every game, and when he eliminated multiple turnovers he ran an effective offense. Broke his own team records with 10 rushing TDs and 609 yards rushing, helping the Vikings become the top rushing offense in the league. He also directed the second-best overall offense in the NFL. Finished with passing stats of 3,853 yards, 18 TDs, 23 INTs and 47 sacks.

2001: A bit of a down year for Culpepper, as it was for the whole offense. Culpepper missed five-plus games with a knee injury at the end of the 2001 season. He still managed to throw for 2,612 yards, 14 TDs, 13 INTs and a 64.2 completion percentage. He also rushed for 416 yards and five TDs.

2000: Earned the starting spot in the Pro Bowl, named All-Pro by USA Today and 2000 NFC Quarterback of the Year by the National Quarterback Club, won the ESPY Award as ESPN’s Breakthrough Athlete of the Year and made Pro Football Weekly’s All-NFC team. Was also named NFL Offensive Player of the Week, twice named NFC Offensive Player of the Week, plus once named Miller Lite Player of the Week. Ranked third on the Vikings’ single-season passing yardage list with 3,937 and tied for second for single-season TD passes with 33.

1999: In his only action with the Vikings, he dropped back three times and rushed for 6 yards. He didn’t attempt any passes.
