| Biography: |
The Vikings signed Darren Bennett on March 19, 2004, in hopes that a veteran punter will help give their special teams some more stability.
In 2003, rookie sixth-round draft pick Eddie Johnson mishandled snaps in three straight games toward the end of the season and was eventually replaced by Leo Araguz.
Bennett has never missed a game in the NFL since signing with the Chargers in 1995. He has a career average of 43.8 yards, with 243 punts inside the 20-yard line and seven punts returned for a touchdown.
2004: After a rough start to the season, Bennett’s average began to climb, reaching 39.3 yards per punt by season’s end with a long of 61 yards.
2003: In his final season with the Chargers, punted 82 times for a gross average of 41.9, but had two returned for touchdowns. Had 28 punts inside the 20-yard line.
2002: Had 87 punts on the season, dropping 31 inside the 20 with a 40.7 average, lowest in his career. Had two punts blocked, more than doubling his career stats. He previously had just one blocked punt in his entire career.
Previous years: Bennett set a team record with a 44.7-yard average in his rookie season and was rewarded with his first trip to the Pro Bowl. Holds every Chargers punting record, including most punts in a career, season and game, most punt yards in a career, season and game, and the highest punting average for a career, season and game. Has been named to two Pro Bowls, and was a member of the Chargers’ 40th Anniversary All-Time Team and named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1990s.
Personal: A former Australian Rules Football star for 12 seasons. Attended Applecross High in Perth, Western Australia. He and wife, Rosemary, have two sons, William Cole and Thomas Ryan. Darren has a web site, www.NFLAussie.com where fans can learn more about Australian Rules Football.
