| Biography: |
Many thought Michael Bennett wouldn’t be there when the Vikings drafted him with the 27th pick of the 2001 draft.
"We got a gift," former head coach Dennis Green said when the Vikings drafted Bennett. "We had Michael Bennett rated as the 10th player on the board … There is probably not a more explosive player on the field."
Shortly after being picked, Bennett proclaimed himself as always being a Vikings fan despite his uncle, Tony Bennett, playing for the Packers. The color purple brought him into the ring of Vikings fans, but the 27th pick in 2001 draft made him a Viking.
2004: Finished the season with only 276 yards on 70 carries and started only seven games because of a knee injury that made him inactive for the first five games of the season. Started both playoff games.
2003: Was limited to eight games and seven starts while recovering from offseason foot surgery from a Jones fracture. Rushed for 447 yards and one touchdown while splitting time with Onterrio Smith and Moe Williams. Finished the season as the franchise’s 10th-leading rushing (2,425 yards) of all-time. Reached the 2,000-yard mark in 30 games, setting another franchise record He and Onterrio Smith became the first Vikings backs to average 5.0 yards in a season.
2002: Bennett proved worthy of the “gift” tag in 2002, when he finished as the No. 2 Viking in team history for single-season rushing with 1,296 yards. He also matured as a pass-blocker picking up the blitz and a receiver out of the backfield with 37 catches for 351 yards. Had a career-high 29 carries against Chicago (10/27) and an 85-yard touchdown run against Tampa Bay (10/3). Showed more patience and maturity as a runner. Led the NFC with a 5.1-yard average per carry and had five 100-yard games.
2001: With 682 yards and two touchdowns on 172 carries, Bennett ranked second in rushing yards among NFC rookies. An 80-yard touchdown off a screen play put him atop the Vikings leader board for longest pass reception by a running back. Had three 100-yard games and became much more of a pass catcher than he was in college, as he hauled in 29 receptions for 226 yards during the course of his rookie season.
College: Bennett entered the draft after completing his junior year, his first year as a starter after spending two years behind Ron Dayne at the University of Wisconsin. He is a dramatically different back from Dayne. Despite only 10 games as a starter, he ranked 10th on the school’s all-time rushing list with 1,979 yards.
Bennett is an extremely quick athlete, a track athlete at Wisconsin, much in the mold of former Viking Robert Smith. Set Wisconsin high school record in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and ran for more than 4,200 yards at Milwaukee Tech High School.
