| Biography: |
After falling out of favor with NFL draft decision-makers prior to the 2002 draft because of rumors of using an illegal substance, the Vikings got what they think was the steal of the 2002 rookie free-agent signing period. Originally, Kelly Campbell was thought to be a third- or fourth-round draft pick, but the Vikings signed him as a free agent three days after the draft.
He showed flashes of his potential during his rookie campaign and continues to be a speedy part-time contributor.
2004: Surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for his career with 364 yards in 2004. He also returned 35 kickoffs for a 21.7-yard average. Tied for second in Vikings history with two kickoff returns of more than 50 yards in a season.
2003: Almost doubled his catches from his rookie season, gathering 25 for 522 yards and four touchdowns. Was also used on 10 reverses for 71 yards. Had four of the Vikings’ seven pass plays of 50 or more yards. Finished with the sixth-best yards-per-catch average (20.9) in team history.
2002: Finished the season with a two-touchdown game against Detroit, becoming only the fifth rookie in team history to accomplish that. Had six catches for 63 yards against New England (11/24), both season highs. Finished the season with 13 catches for 176 yards and three touchdowns but came on strong when given an opportunity at the end of the season. Played in six games, starting two.
College: Campbell was the first three-time All-ACC wide receiver in Georgia Tech history and was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award in 2001. His sophomore season was his strongest, catching 69 passes for 1,105 yards and 10 TDs — a year in which he broke Georgia Tech’s single-season records in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
After a strong junior year that produced 963 yards receiving on 59 catches, Campbell’s stats fell to 708 yards on 56 receptions his senior year, but much of that had to do with missing three games to injury.
Personal: Lettered four times in football, three in track and once in basketball while at Mays (Atlanta, Ga.) High School. Was Georgia’s 4A state champion in the triple jump and the 4-by-400-meter relay.
