| Biography: |
The buzz-phrase on the Vikings’ 2002 first-round draft pick, offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie, was that he did not give up a sack in his college career. That ended with his first NFL game after a holdout that lasted nearly 100 days.
McKinnie is considered more of a pass blocker than a run blocker, but at 6-foot-8, 343 pounds, he can obviously move defensive linemen. “I wanted a guy bigger than me, and we got one,” Vikings coach Mike Tice said after drafting McKinnie in April 2002.
Tice compared McKinnie to Orlando Pace, an enormous Pro Bowl tackle already in the league. McKinnie is also extremely athletic.
2004: Started every game for the Vikings, moving his consecutive starts to 39, despite battling back problems. Also started both playoff games.
2003: Started every game, extending his consecutive starts to 23. Helped pave the way for the NFL’s No. 1-ranked offense.
2002: Split time in his first game after signing on Nov. 2 and started the remaining seven games at left tackle.
College: Won many awards during his two seasons at Miami — first-team All-Big East in 2000 and 2001, CNN/SI National Player of the Year in 2001, Outland Trophy winner as the finest interior lineman in college in 2001, and All-America in 2000 and 2001. Played two years at Lackawanna Junior College before transferring to Miami. He went from a defensive end in high school to an offensive tackle at Lackawanna. He redshirted his first season at Miami and went on to a stellar two-year career, but he still is improving.
Personal: At Woodbury (N.J.) High School he put the shot, threw the discus and RAN the 400 meter. Lettered twice in track and field.
