| Biography: |
SUSPENDED FOR THE 2005 SEASON FOR VIOLATING THE NFL’S DRUG POLICY
Onterrio Smith came into the NFL with a reputation of being a running back with good vision, but his sights of being a first-round draft pick in 2003 quickly were dashed. When he was still available early in the fourth round, it was too much for the Vikings to pass up.
Since, Smith has proved his instincts as a runner and has improved his ability to pick up blitzes as a blocker. However, his inability to steer clear of violations of the NFL’s drug policy has put his career in jeopardy.
2004: Was the Vikings’ leading rusher in a season that featured four different feature backs. Had 544 yards on 124 carries, 394 yards on 36 catches, and 155 yards on nine kickoff returns despite serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy. Accounted for a team-high 198 yards (rushing, receiving and kickoff returns) during the Vikings’ playoff run.
2003: As a fourth-round pick, proclaimed himself the “Steal of the Draft.” Played in 15 games, starting three, and rushed for 579 yards with a 5.4-yard average and five touchdowns. Returned 27 kickoffs for a 21.8-yard average. Ranked second in the NFL among rookie rushers. Had three rushing TDs against Kansas City, a Vikings rookie record, and holds the top two single-game rushing marks in team history with 148 yards against Chicago on Dec. 14 and 146 yards against the Chiefs on Dec. 20.
College: Gained 2,199 yards with 19 touchdowns on 419 carries (5.2 avg) in two seasons at Oregon, ranking seventh on the school’s all-time rushing list. Only the second Duck to gain 1,000 yards a season twice in his career. Averaged 131.0 all-purpose yards per game at Oregon. Named All-Pac 10 first-team and team MVP in 2002, when he ranked second in the conference and 14th in the nation in rushing. Second-team All-Pac 10 selection in 2001 as a kickoff returner. Sat out the 2000 season after transferring from Tennessee, where he played in eight games as a reserve in 1999.
High School: Super Prep All-American and two-time all-state selection at Grant (Sacramento, Cal.) High School. Set single-season school records with 3,154 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns (53 rushing) as a senior and led the team to a 10-1-1 record. Also set career records with 6,123 yards rushing and 99 scores. Posted single-game rushing best of 373 yards against Yuma City and claimed six touchdowns in three different games. Has a daughter, Onterria.
