| Biography: |
In the 2003 draft, the Vikings had a chance to select the more highly touted Terrell Suggs with the ninth overall pick, but instead of picking a pass-rushing defensive end/linebacker the team went with an all-around defensive lineman in Kevin Williams. He didn’t disappoint, setting several rookie records while starting all 16 games and earning Pro Bowl honors in his second season.
2004: Named first-team Associated Press All-Pro and earned his first Pro Bowl honor. Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week against Jacksonville, a game in which he scored a touchdown on a 77-yard fumble recovery, the third-longest in Vikings history and the longest by a lineman. Led all NFL defensive tackles with 11.5 sacks, which made it the second straight season he led the team. Made his second career interception in the season finale against Washington. His 22 sacks in the first two seasons are a Vikings record. All this he did while playing through a knee injury for much of the season.
2003: Started the season at left defensive end but was moved inside for the final four games, where he seemed to excel even more. Ended with 10.5 sacks, trailing only Suggs’ 12 among NFL rookies. Named NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month for December. Set a Vikings rookie record with three sacks of Arizona’s Josh McCown in the final game of the season. Only the second rookie defender in franchise history to start all 16 games.
College: Had 42 career starts at Oklahoma State with 160 tackles (109 solos), 18.5 sacks for minus 141 yards, 38 tackles-for-loss of 184 yards, 14 pass deflections and four fumble recoveries. All-Big Twelve Conference first-team pick by the Associated Press and the league’s coaches as a defensive tackle, recording 61 tackles (49 solos) and tying for the team lead with seven sacks in 2002. Started final two games of 2001 at end and first nine games at tackle. In 2000, played in every game, starting four of the first five games at right defensive tackle, then shifting to right end for four games. Named freshman All-American third-team selection by The Sporting News and All-Big Twelve Conference third-team pick by the league’s coaches in 1999.
High School: Attended Fordyce (Ark.) High and was one of the top prospects in the state of Arkansas, playing on both sides of the ball for a 10-2 squad his senior season. On offense, he had nine receptions, including two for touchdowns. On defense, he had 60 total tackles, 20 tackles-for-loss, five sacks, one fumble recovery for a touchdown and one interception returned for a touchdown. All-State choice who averaged more than 18 points per game in basketball.
