The Vikings were looking for a punt returner in 2003 and drafted Keenan Howry in the seventh round to fill those duties. He did that, along with adding practice depth at wide receiver in his rookie campaign.
2004: A shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve five weeks into the season. Prior to that, had two punt returns and two kickoff returns.
2003: Returned 35 punts for 247 yards, setting a Vikings rookie record.
College: All-Pac 10 Conference first-team selection in 2002, becoming the Ducks’ first two-time All-Pac 10 pick since Ricky Whittle (1994-95). As a senior, ranked second in the conference and 21st in the nation with 32 punt returns for 458 yards (14.3 avg) and two touchdowns, and was third on the team with 40 receptions for 784 yards (19.6 avg) and five scores. Named Associated Press All-American third-team choice in 2001 and All-Pac 10 Conference first-team selection as a receiver and punt returner. Started every game as a junior, leading the team with 52 receptions for 682 yards (13.1 avg) and nine touchdowns, and returned 35 punts for 469 yards (13.4 avg) and two touchdowns. Was an All-Pac 10 Conference honorable mention as a sophomore, leading the team with 52 catches for 780 yards (15.0 avg) and five touchdowns and 36 punts for 282 yards (7.8 avg). Played in every game as a true freshman, starting eight.
High School: USA Today honorable mention All-American at Los Alamitos (Calif.) High, where he had 73 receptions for 1,320 yards and 17 touchdowns to earn Sunset League MVP his senior year. Two-time All-State, All-CIF and All-Orange County honoree.
