| Biography: |
Cornerback Ken Irvin came to the Vikings in the 2003 edition of free agency a week after they signed starter Denard Walker. Irvin, who played for Buffalo from 1995 to 2001 before spending a year in New Orleans, was expected to contend with Walker for starting job opposite Brian Williams. Instead, once Irvin recovered from preseason injuriesm he replaced Walker in the starting lineup.
Irvin’s experience was a valuable addition to a backfield that had become dangerously young. Irvin enters 2005 with 140 games and 71 starts, during which time he has made 377 tackles and 10 interceptions. Before tearing his Achilles before the season opener last year, he had missed only four games in nine years of NFL play.
2004: A torn Achilles in pregame warm-ups of the season opener led to his placement on injured reserve.
2003: Started eight games, eventually replacing Denard Walker in the starting lineup after beginning the season as a nickel back while recovering from preseason injuries. Had 58 tackles and 15 passes defensed.
2002: Started nine games for the Saints, garnering 61 tackles and two interceptions.
2001: Played in 14 games but started only four for Buffalo, spending the remaining time as a nickel back. Had 38 tackles.
2000: Started every game for the Bills, registering 49 tackles and two interceptions.
1999: In his second season as the starting left cornerback, he started the first 14 games before tearing a ligament in his foot. Finished with 56 tackles.
1998: In his first season a starter, he played and started every game in Buffalo. Had 65 tackles and two forced fumbles.
1997: Played in all 16 games, mainly as a special teams contributor and nickel and dime back, but didn’t start any. Had two interceptions.
1996: Started one game, but played mostly in nickel and dime situations. Finished the season with 23 tackles.
1995: Started three games in his rookie year, finishing with 21 tackles.
College: Was a fourth-round selection of the Bills in 1995. Started nine games at left cornerback in his senior year at Memphis. Started every game at right cornerback in his junior year.
High School: Was an all-state player at Pepperell (Lindale, Ga.) High School. Was a quarterback and punt returner in high school and an all-state trackster in the high hurdles.
Personal: Active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He and wife Shurhonda have a son, Joshua Ken, and daughter, Ava.
